That's a good point. If I had to simplify, I'd get rid of the total sugar. I'd leave added sugar along with saturated fat & sodium.

Added sugar is a great proxy also for lower caloric density which again, research says is the best thing to do.

Apple=more sugar than lollipop but much lower caloric density. Typical case. I am trying but failing to find a counter-example. ?
