There's a difference between automation to fly a plane & using computation to make a decision with no right answer. This cannot be overcome.

Algorithms in human affairs are complex, dynamic, increasingly opaque (even to their coders) & now used in systems where we can't calibrate.

Lack of neutrality in these algorithms is inherent to the enterprise. That's what Facebook & the rest should own up.http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/19/opinion/the-real-bias-built-in-at-facebook.html …

Zuckerberg: Fox News most engaged news outlet on Facebook. Well, Facebook is biased *towards* its type of content.pic.twitter.com/eNyujGbGxW

Facebook's biases are not on a liberal/conservative axis. It's biased to be "viral, clicky, upbeat or quarrelsome":http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/19/opinion/the-real-bias-built-in-at-facebook.html …

Zuckerberg met with Glenn Beck to assure him that Facebook's not biased against him. Beck-type anti-vaccination theories thrive on Facebook.

Donald Trump and conspiracy theories. Both do very well on Facebook. It's what people want and it's the algorithm.http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/19/upshot/donald-trump-and-conspiracy-theories-what-a-poll-in-2011-signaled.html …

Algorithms aren't shaped just by what we want but also by what the company wants from us. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/19/opinion/the-real-bias-built-in-at-facebook.html …pic.twitter.com/JvGr5qdZDO

Hey, everyone asking me if media really reports algorithms as neutral "with no human judgment." Yes, yes, they do.pic.twitter.com/utsikyGNcF

There IS potential neutrality here though. It's the same reason we count votes instead of decide by committee who is president.

They don't do that though. It's count (a la Twitter trending) then vet (via human) THEN algorithmically predict clickability.

What you are shown is what surfaced, survived vetting, and then algorithm thought you'd click on. More filter bubble.

In Turkey, Twitter trending is one way dissidents can break into national agenda. No chance on Facebook because of algo.
