Facebook's algorithm is political but not the way conservatives claim or Facebook defends it. My latest for the NYT.http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/19/opinion/the-real-bias-built-in-at-facebook.html …
Algorithms are biased because that's in their nature. Problem isn't secret biases of coders. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/19/opinion/the-real-bias-built-in-at-facebook.html …pic.twitter.com/pzEcn5IzKZ
@jasonbaldridge what would an “unbiased" Facebook timeline look like?
Did you read the piece? My point is that it cannot exist. The question is which ones and how.
right, so let’s say FB says “sure, we’re not neutral. we do as we please with the timeline.” then what?
then we can have that discussion. right now, they are fighting hard to position themselves as neutral.. for a reason.
I don’t think there are many media sources of any kind that position themselves as _not_ neutral, are there?
also, determining what a viable solution would look like seems to me like a pretty good way to motivate ppl to come to the table
there is decades of infrastructure and effort to monitor bias at old media. Public editors, watchdogs, ombudsman, transparency..
Let's start with Facebook and Google even admitting there's an issue and I'll be happy to discuss next steps with anyone.
what would you want them to say? “there is no such thing as an unbiased information stream”?
Let's get them admitting the basic and obvious truths, and I and others have a lot to say that would not fit in 140.
