But that's partly because *of* Facebook. We're a lot more connected than before (and more migration, too).https://twitter.com/nytimesworld/status/695469168750104576 …

Facebook calculated that we people are much closer than the traditional “six degrees of separation.” http://nyti.ms/1PE9Hic

.@zeynep @barrywellman @nytimesworld I disagree. Facebook "friends" are not real friends. We are still at 6 degrees. Not 3.

@NAChristakis @barrywellman Few people friend complete strangers. Friends+weak ties. They're friends enough in Milgram's experiment sense.

@zeynep @barrywellman of so (and I'm not sure) then Facebook has just changed measurement, not reality. #still6degrees

@NAChristakis @barrywellman Did anyone recently find 6? Big problem with FB study is the population. FB people are online, more connected.

@NAChristakis I keep in touch with friends I'd absolutely would not have without FB. This is like saying phones don't change connectivity.

.@zeynep fundamental reality of our social connections has not changed. Eg phones did not make us polygamous. Seehttp://humannaturelab.net/research/research-areas/#research1 …

@AmarDhand @NAChristakis Cognitive constraints on feelings of being close are a different question. Again, "6" wasn't the number in 1643.

@AmarDhand @NAChristakis Unless the argument is that "6" represents an immutable number since the Pleistocene, why can't it change? It can.

@AmarDhand @NAChristakis Group composition, etc. dramatically change, as culture & social dynamics change. That affects network shape/size.
