Relief that we heard the truth about jobs and technology maybe for the first time in many many #SOTU speeches. But fear it will be ignored.+

For years—back to GW Bush presidency—at every SOTU, a president would say "upskilling is the answer" and I'd groan. Yes, a bit but ... no.

This year, I heard truth. Workers have less leverage, even when economy is good. Me, longer: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/19/opinion/sunday/the-machines-are-coming.html …pic.twitter.com/Xqh7jB3e5T

Arguments for why it will be okay depend on 1-Industrial revolution; 2-Assumption humans have unique skills that can't be done by machines.

Industrial revolution is one historical example, and almost did the planet in through major upheaval & global wars. Not feeling comfort.

Also, the industrial revolution mechanized; there were vast areas of tasks that were doable only by humans. This is harder to argue now.+

But key is this—and am happy to hear @POTUS use this word: leverage. Workers lost leverage & power, regardless of the economy.

Should you learn new skills? Yes. I'm a college professor. 😂😂 But the idea that we can merely upskill ourselves out of this isn't justified.

And by the way, we didn't just "upskill" ourselves out of the industrial revolution's upheaval either. We built worker/citizen protections.+

The world built stabilizing structures only after much destruction, two global wars, and a nuclear stand-off. No argument for a repeat.
