So now that I'm stuck in Istanbul traffic.
Few #TurkeyElection thoughts to follow.
It's true that this wasn't a level playing field. Press freedoms (never great) are in shambles. Rule of law (never great). Same. But.. 2/n
...plain fact is opposition parties in Turkey are also in shambles and politically stuck. I've said this before and folks get mad at me..3/n
...resurgence of conflict, plus opposition parties that can't even elect speaker to parliament with 60% of seats plus media censorship..
..Voters in Turkey created de facto coalition between AKP and nationalist MHP. MHP leader wouldn't and AKP dragged feet so voters did. 5/n
I will continue to criticize the dreadful state of freedoms in Turkey. Not because the past was great but because I stand on principle. 7/n
...So opposition parties in Turkey aren't offering plausible politics beyond their base. Media pressure makes that harder of course. 7/n
So only big difference in Turkey's politics in past decade is HDP firmly past threshold. After five awful months, still past. New player.8/n
And AKP should thank the vote monitors that pro-govt media has been calling "terrorists." Polls were off by 8-10%. Monitors were essential.
So that's it. I'll continue to watch/follow my core issues as always: Internet freedoms, movements etc. And be stuck in traffic.
