zeynep tufekci added,
The ridiculous media ban in Turkey is challenged in court, we shall see. Turkish government has order similar bans many times before.
Few newspapers disobeying media ban on reporting but it had major effect on mass media TV coverage, which matters. Two weeks to elections.
Turkish TV like reporting on Voldemort. Bombers "from city that cannot be named" though umm, known. Vague something. Vague something else.
In fairness, media ban not that important because most media already turned into government mouthpiece, and not very discriminatory. Ugh.
Combine ridiculous media bans, mass media basically government mouthpiece and free-for-all social media=much confusion & polarization.
Hence my points in #citpcensorship. Destroying filters & flooding public with bad info (while good info exists) is also form of censorship.
For ex: Turkish gov't spokespaper "US & UK media cried out in fear on announcement of Turkish aircraft carrier."pic.twitter.com/pj8zG82mYn
"Newspaper" goes on to say "US media panicked" & said:"Turkey is on its way to become the strongest country in the region". "Cries of fear"
I tried to give understandable example. Seems no requirement for even mildest plausibility anymore to bizarre claims on Turkish mass media.
You're thinking "all countries have media that make crazy claims." True. But we are talking mainstream mass media, only tolerated kind.
