@mariachong Reading, which I love, is an isolating technology. It's also the opposite of face-to-face conversation. So can't argue both.

@zeynep She is not saying "only face-to-face" or "more face-to-face." She is saying BETTER face-to-face (I agree on that point). 😊

@mariachong Who can disagree? Which is why we should discuss root causes: long work hours, connectivity demands of employers. Walkability.

@zeynep The more stressed people are, the more they rely on artificial dopamine-delivery systems whether they are organic or mechanical.

@mariachong A conversation with a friend over phone, letter or text or pigeon is not artificial. TV show, maybe. Not conversation.

@zeynep I agree, but it's coming through a mechanical efficiency mediator. And that is significant, even if not artificial. #syringe

@mariachong And there is nothing more artificial than words on a page, transforming oral information into visual. Sorry not making sense.

@zeynep Attention, not artificiality, is key. Assaults to allocation of attention may have a detrimental effect on empathy.

@mariachong So many claims there. Attention=empathy. Umm, maybe? Books can be isolating. Focused attention can be isolating.

@mariachong Attention on each other? Well, again, books break that. Haven't you seen a bookworm kid? But obviously, they are complex.

@mariachong Still, no evidence that current social tech is implicated in destruction of empathy, see plenty reasons in other direction.

@zeynep I love this discussion & your willingness to examine the issue. Lots more observation/study to be done + tech is here to stay. 😊
