Software brings complexity (and often opacity) to the operation of objects, and it can also be used to detect testing and thus thwart it.

Smart "cheating" needs smarter testing. Tests in the wild—not lab, hard-to-tamper logs, open source/code audits, cryptographic signing, etc.
