It started a fight in the school between counselor (who took my side) and teacher who wouldn't budge & let me in to talented & gifted class.

Anyway, I said, forget it, and counselor let me into (not allowed for 7th graders) art and French classes because she felt so bad. Alas.

But I just wonder how many students of color are discouraged because their early explorations are met with hostility. Suspicion. Disbelief.

Rest of story is me is drifting academically, until going back to Turkey and being placed, through luck, in a class with excellent students.

Once I was among good students, I learned from them about systematic study, late in my education. Strong benefit to me from mixed classes.

Thinking back, my middle school years in US school dominated by non-racist teachers not able to overcome the racism & unfounded disbelief.
