Seriously: school buses CAN'T be the safest design as is. And they're so inefficient! What cartel is behind it?https://twitter.com/emptywheel/status/643503918463455236 …

While we're simplifying FAFSA, can someone explain why school buses are designed the way they are?

@DaveMc99TA And we really buy the "no seat belts are safe" thing there? Think only bc of all the rules abt buses, not the buses themselves.

@emptywheel @DaveMc99TA Yeah, buses have different center of gravity. I know it sounds like an excuse but lemme see if i can find paper.

@emptywheel @DaveMc99TA So basically bus compartmentalization works very well and is a specific design. http://www.nhtsa.gov/Vehicle+Safety/Seat+Belts/Seat+Belts+on+School+Buses+--+May+2006 …

@emptywheel @DaveMc99TA Also considering the issues that may arise, not being belted (and able to get out themselves quickly) is good design

@zeynep And I'm skeptical most kids would have probs w/some kind of safety harness, cause they're all masters at booster seats. @DaveMc99TA

@emptywheel @DaveMc99TA Given how few fatalities now, you have to consider seatbelt on rare events like this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prestonsburg,_Kentucky_bus_disaster …

@zeynep Oh, I'm willing to forgo seatbelt. But could you compartment the same on lower profile vehicle? Or do it better? @DaveMc99TA

@emptywheel @DaveMc99TA Lower smaller bus might need seatbelt. The things are connected, height, weight and not needing seatbelt. So...

@emptywheel @DaveMc99TA Given size and center of gravity of school buses, the danger to occupants usually needs having to get out quickly.

@zeynep Right: so lower the center of gravity, minimize tipping. @DaveMc99TA
