"Elite failure." Great term of so much of what ails us. It's not just that they're elites, but they're bad at it.https://twitter.com/EthanZ/status/609355420604440576 …

@zeynep I'm finding Christopher Hayes's "Twilight of the Elites" very helpful on this topic. Elite failure undermines massive systems.

@zeynep @EthanZ Wasted privilege is the worst privilege. Also, the lucky are always judged, ultimately, by how they treat the unlucky.

@zeynep @EthanZ I think this may be what historians use to define our era. It was the Catholic Church scandal that crystallized it for me.

@alb202 @zeynep I've been using "Age of Mistrust", specifically in institutions. But that's deeply connected to elite failure.

@zeynep What Hayes does well is offer a model for why elitism self-perpetuates and gets less competent over time.

@EthanZ Will read. On the sociology side: Chuck Tilly on dynamics of "durable inequality" and and of course, Tuchman on "March of Folly".
