Two-tier social media: the rich pay to opt out of Facebook ads, the poor get targeted endlessly. Privacy becomes a luxury good.
@katecrawford Ads already cross-subsidize, we can carry that model over. I'd hope for a micro-payment *ecology* that cross-subsidizes. sigh.

@zeynep agree, this is the core problem. Imagine paying to opt out across 2-4 services x dozens of trackers. Unaffordable & ineffective. -
@katecrawford Yes. Much seems out of reach now. I thought: can we get rid of "free" as mantra, start discussing costs/externalities?
