@mathewi You are already paying for them every time you purchase a product that has an ad budget. You can be ignorant of that, lose control.

@zeynep: I realize I am paying for them with my attention and my data — I have a lot more of those than I do money

@mathewi No, you are already paying for them with money. If products relied less on paid advertising, they'd cost less. Now you pay twice.

@zeynep: Okay, but the vast majority of products are always going to rely on ads, right? Regardless of what Facebook does or doesn't do

@mathewi The idea that "ad-based" is free is total obfuscation, simply hides the indirect (and costly with a lot of overhead) way we pay.

@zeynep: A bigger issue is that if you had to pay for Facebook and Twitter and Gmail and other services, far fewer people could use them

@mathewi We can carry over many subsidy model. If such self-interested ad based models can subsidize, so can a subscription model.

@zeynep: So some people would pay and others would get services for free or subsidized? How would that ratio be determined?

@mathewi How are they determined now in ad-financed model? Messy. Some micro-payment, freemium futures, some cross-subsidy, experimentation.
