@mathewi The idea that "ad-based" is free is total obfuscation, simply hides the indirect (and costly with a lot of overhead) way we pay.

@mathewi Okay, so let us first dispense with the idea they are "free". It's a different financing model. So we can compare costs/benefits.

@zeynep: A bigger issue is that if you had to pay for Facebook and Twitter and Gmail and other services, far fewer people could use them -
@mathewi Right now, ads to the richest people/countries subsidize the rest. Server costs same for people in Malaysia, but ads worth little.
