This is much higher than I would have expected and much higher than what was observed in London. Unclear why we’d see so much incidental infection. I’m hearing similar stats in NJ and CT hospitals. Creates some concern could be spreading by contact with healthcare system itself.https://twitter.com/alykatzz/status/1479552490764967940 …

New York has its first official breakdown of what share of people are hospitalized for COVID vs. how many are hospitalized with incidental COVID. In NYC it's 49% for COVID, everyone else just happened to test positive. pic.twitter.com/fNUmMK2DM9

I think most testing is at entry so this is unlikely reflecting the hospital spread *yet*, but I’m pretty sure there’s also good deal of hospital spread. I think the amount of community spread is pretty wild, and vastly undercounted. (And some of it may be barely symptomatic).

Yup. My son tested positive on a rapid test, therefore was likely infectious. Not a single symptom. If my husband hadn’t gotten it first, we never would have known.

I screened my kids to go back to school. 4 year old positive. Zero symptoms. None.

Also at our hospitals no one is wearing N95s; all wearing surgical masks. When prevalence was low that seemed fine but now it seems weirdly and pointlessly risky.

Wild Bonkers Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs Choose your own adjective time when describing viral density. But most of them prob undersell the extreme spread of infections atm For all intents.. everyone I know is anecdotally relaying the exact same story: "Everyone I know has COVID"

I’m thinking more in terms of general contact with the healthcare system: many people admitted to the hospital will have some prior, outpatient contact with the healthcare system leading up to their hospitalization

imo, we have to stop thinking about it like this, that the presence of the virus in the upper respiratory is a test for the disease. this is true for way too many people right now, and will be maybe in future covid seasons. maybe lung xrays / breathing tests more clinically impt
