NYC at ~50,000 known cases per day. I’d guess as many from untracked rapid tests—and who knows how many untested. ~25% test positivity. Yes hospitalization rate is very low but a small % of a huge number is big. Decision is what gets disrupted in an orderly vs. disorderly manner.https://twitter.com/MarkLevineNYC/status/1477802021218656261 …

Hospitalizations in NYC are rising faster than at any point since March, 2020. With a healthcare workforce which is now exhausted and depleted. We can't just accept this. We have to do more to slow this wave. pic.twitter.com/LuMFgSDJMj

There is a point at which exponential math takes over policy preferences. I don’t understand how this isn’t obvious two years into this pandemic.

I get the importance of this question but it’s not just that. Hospitals just cannot keep up with staffing. Plus, there’s enough hospitalized “from”—almost all from the vaccinated to add. And hospital workers have family members sick, and their subway out and childcare collapsing.https://twitter.com/Michael_Carmine/status/1477830979750400001 …

Hospitalized WITH or FROM ? Why can't we get that data clearly?

One’s personal views on one’s personal risk are largely irrelevant to a crisis of infrastructure, though. Yes by all means people should get vaccinated, get boosters, and vaccinate children.https://twitter.com/TReasonabilist/status/1477832969838542851 …

Everyone in your family will eventually get covid. It will ikely be with us our entire lived. Get vaccinated and hope for the best, but you can't live in fear forever.

Yeah. I totally don’t understand is “living in fear” talking point. Infrastructure stress and failure is not about personal risk tolerance.https://twitter.com/THAToneil/status/1477835797361577988 …

I don't know anybody in NYC who's "living in fear" the way we really did in March 2020. I do know plenty of people who don't want to get it or spread it in the midst of an exponential surge and who are willing to take some simple precautions to lower the risk.

Say what? I went to see plays in NYC parks. In fact Merry Wives by Public Theater was so good that I went twice. This caricature some people have of many people living in fear is that often the opposite of truth. I’m aware, though, how stretched-thin hospitals are. https://twitter.com/ahresnick/status/1477840566268223492 …

I'm not sure what to make of the state having so far declined to restrict elective surgeries in NYC hospitals... suggests the state govt thinks they are not as stretched as these warnings have it

The good part is that this wave is producing fewer severe patients, fewer of whom end up in the ICU and fewer of those end up on ventilators. And “elective” surgeries are often important! But the number of people out sick is huge on so many sectors and it connects up.

Right I agree. But the state has imposed certain elective procedure restrictions (softer than the prior round) at selected upstate hospitals in recent weeks. So that's something they see as in their toolkit, and they haven't deemed it necessary yet in the city.

Hospitals have a lot of staff out sick, schools will have teachers out sick, subways will have delays from staff out sick, anyone who returns to office will have outbreaks, and some small number of those do end up in ERs/hospitals, meanwhile childcare is a big issue, etc.
