Genuine question. I once had a medical doctor who swore by saline nose/throat gargling for upper respiratory tract illnesses—he was a by the book, orthodox, evidence-based doc. I did not research it. Anyone know the evidentiary status of his claim? I did not see a recent review.

Have to ask, was doctor Japanese perchance? My mother (Japanese) is always imploring me to gargle more—growing up we always gargled as soon as we came home!

No, but I remembered that incident (a while back) after recently noticing it is a big, almost standard, part of hygiene recommendations in Japan and was just curious about the evidentiary basis.
