A really good and forthright conversation between @chrislhayes and Dr. Fauci On CDC isolation guidelines Not sure I agree with argument against using rapid tests to clear people out of isolation But this is a very good discussion, well worth your timehttps://www.msnbc.com/all-in/watch/dr-fauci-explains-new-cdc-isolation-guidelines-129732165818 …

The decision not to use rapid tests here (but then say you're buying 500M of them, ramping up test-to-stay in schools) is mind-bogglingly incoherent.

I think the reality is that we don't have the tests. That 500 million is a target starting in January. Won't ramp up immediately. An alternative is to triage test capacity, direct it to health-care and other critical settings. Not happening either. Not enough tests to test with.

Similarly, capacity-saving triage to end isolation in five days without tests, use only source control via masks should talk about masks with better fit-and-filter, maybe differentiate between vaccinated/prior-infected, etc. But you can't do it overnight, and we didn't till now.

They really should come out and say this. 1) critical infrastructure can’t function w long isolation 2) tests are in short supply rather than blaming antigen test performance day 5+ 3) admit policy could cause some sick people to come out too quickly and get others infected.

We absolutely do not have the rapid test supply to implement a test out of quarantine policy right now. I think they would have at least recommend (if not required) testing if we had sufficient supply. Seven days no test would have been a better policy for now imho.

I think Zeynep’s saying — a better policy decision might have focused on 5 days of isolation for “essential workers” including health care workers, who could return to work with a negative rapid test, and the “testing surge” could have been triaged towards those essential workers

I think this is it. I can’t imagine a world where they don’t know it’s better to say you have to test out of it, but they also can’t say that because there’s already no tests.

It comes to, masking isn’t necessary really, because there are no masks to be had… so the test isn’t necessary, because we’ll, we don’t have test to give. Facilities are either overwhelmed with people needed tests or running out of healthy staff to administer the tests #screwed
