This understanding has become the conventional wisdom, but doesn't make much sense to me. 1.) By June, it was fairly well established the outdoor activity was low risk. 2.) There were not any outbreaks associated with BLM protests.https://twitter.com/ggreenwald/status/1475825263732834306 …

Because you are wrong about (1). In June, public health “experts” and the MSM were *simultaneously* endorsing protests as safe and *condemning* other outdoor gatherings as reckless. Hell, NFL stadiums were mostly empty months later when football season started.

I think you have to be careful how experts is defined (as your quotations indicate). I was doing stuff outdoors with friends in May.
@zeynep's "Open the beaches" op-ed was in April.4 replies 0 retweets 39 likes -
Zeynep has been right about basically everything but she’s not the voice of the public health consensus. She’s had to convince mainstream public health folks to change their minds over and over.

Who was arguing she was wrong about this in May? I was having parties in my backyard on the basis of that argument.

Reminder this was happening in May, with the guardian referring to him as ‘the most sane man around’.https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/may/07/florida-grim-reaper-beach-interview …

My recollection is everyone thought he was crazy. I certainly did! What was your understanding in May?

Not my recollection at all (and clearly the Guardian didn’t think so). Also in the UK at the time even outdoors we were discouraged from meeting anyone outside of our ‘bubble’ and were told to try to stay 6 ft apart at all times.

He was widely celebrated both on traditional media and on social media, unfortunately.
