Today's update on SF/@UCSF numbers. Bottom line –huge increase in cases & test positivity. Hospitalizations still pretty benign (though early signs of an uptick). Most remarkable stat is our asymptomatic test positivity rate (ATPR) @UCSFHospitals – now ~7%, or ~1-in-14.(1/16)pic.twitter.com/tvLWNrHqFA

That remarkably high asymptomatic positivity sounds like the vaccines are doing an amazing job—since the PCR test (I assume it's PCR?) can pick up even a minute amount of virions. Here in NYC, we are breathing Omicron mist (~25% test positivity). I joke we can just wave the swab.

I suspected we were vastly undercounting Omicron. If 7% of people are harboring Omicron now, Omicron is going to run out of unboosted people to infect in less than 2 weeks. Would be useful to develop a Omicron-specific serology test so we can retroactively measure what % got it.

Was on a packed bus last week. About half of the people were wearing their masks below their nose. A few were coughing and sniffling. One pulled down his mask each time he coughed so he could cough into his hand. Someone doubt any of them are going to get tested.

New York city positivity rate is still going up… I believe we are near or at ~max test ceiling anyway.

Rising %positive reflects, in part, the inability to scale, a relative max test ceiling. Yesterday's incident case becomes today's tested and today's gets kicked 2 days down the road. Is there a (theoretical) absolute max test ceiling? Sure. We're approaching it asymptotically.
