Today's update on SF/@UCSF numbers. Bottom line –huge increase in cases & test positivity. Hospitalizations still pretty benign (though early signs of an uptick). Most remarkable stat is our asymptomatic test positivity rate (ATPR) @UCSFHospitals – now ~7%, or ~1-in-14.(1/16)pic.twitter.com/tvLWNrHqFA

That remarkably high asymptomatic positivity sounds like the vaccines are doing an amazing job—since the PCR test (I assume it's PCR?) can pick up even a minute amount of virions. Here in NYC, we are breathing Omicron mist (~25% test positivity). I joke we can just wave the swab.

25% positivity means that, when you're standing in line to get tested, the odds are that the person in front of you or behind you has covid.

The chance for both people to test negative is 75% x 75% or 56.25%.

I suspected we were vastly undercounting Omicron. If 7% of people are harboring Omicron now, Omicron is going to run out of unboosted people to infect in less than 2 weeks. Would be useful to develop a Omicron-specific serology test so we can retroactively measure what % got it.

Was on a packed bus last week. About half of the people were wearing their masks below their nose. A few were coughing and sniffling. One pulled down his mask each time he coughed so he could cough into his hand. Someone doubt any of them are going to get tested.

That’s right @zeynep it’s hard to breathe and not catch Omicron right now. Rough truth, but hopeful about hospital numbers + UK data around admitted with and not for covid. #vax and #boost if you can. Grateful for all the badness we are being spared from because of vaccines

The ratio of asymptomatic positivity and symptomatic positivity doesn't seem to have changed much over the pandemic, so the high-ness could just reflect density of infected in the population.
