I say this seriously: I think part of this attitude goes back to wanting to do things that "build character" in a quasi-Calvinist manner, but end up doing so in the manner of Calvin and Hobbes, instead. https://twitter.com/xkcd/status/1473016814615552001 …pic.twitter.com/6LR87j3pVU

No need to "but natural immunity"... Yes, of course, it is a thing, as it always was, and will increasingly be part of the picture but... Why, why, why would one not want to give one's immune system some solid training before? I'm not interested in a fair fight with the virus.

Also, what part of immunity generated by the vaccine is artificial? It's my immune system! Feels like the way manufacturers like to claim "no artificial flavors" to mean "no synthetic ones", while adding "natural" molecules (exact same as the synthetic ones!) to flavor things.

"You must be hiding under your table, shivering with anxiety, so afraid of the virus!" No, I feel *more* confident doing things exactly because I don't believe in a fair fight with a virus. I'm on my side! The virus isn't a moral agent. It's *not* getting a wai khru from me.

My SoundCloud is this donation campaign! Support Doctors Without Borders so that people in places like Yemen and Burundi can also fight this virus and other challenges with more defenses on their side. (Donations up to $41K matched! DM to add to match😀).https://events.doctorswithoutborders.org/campaign/zeynepmatch2021 …

Natural immunity seems like a good thing to already have and a bad thing to seek out

Exactly. But @zeynep always kind of hand waves away the millions and millions of people who got COVID before vaccines and she thinks they should lose their jobs if they won’t also vax on top of their infection inquired immunity. I will never understand it.

I don’t see any of these people going bear hunting with their bare hands. Why not have a fair fight? /s

If you really want to “trust your immune system” go get vaccinated!

I think it comes from a (reasonable in other cases) level of skepticism about managed medical prevention versus the natural course. eg proactive removal of wisdom teeth, inductions with no risk factors at 39 weeks, daily aspirin not panning out, etc.

I’d love to see data on this, but I have a hard time believing people feel the same way about statins that they do about vaccines.

When I looked at smallpox, I couldn't see "but natural immunity" example. And it had been there for not just a couple but thousands of years. Then vaccine came. Back then people were demonizing the vaccine but it worked.
