WHO *finally* updates its recommendations, directing healthcare workers to wear masks like N95s or KF94s—the appropriate protection for this airborne virus, and something for which evidence has been increasingly loud and clear since spring/summer of 2020.https://twitter.com/WHO/status/1473668324454195203 …

Key next step is to formalize this, because as many scientists have been pointing out since spring/summer of 2020, while there is some overlap, the best set of mitigations for an airborne virus whose predominant transmission mechanism is aerosols is different than a droplet one.

Sad that we did not spend the billions of dollars wasted on plexiglass barriers—which is associated with higher transmission because it can impede ventilation, as documented in studies—on proper masks of correct fit and filter, ventilation, HEPA filters and other tools that help.

The next step should be loud, because of this. Course corrections cannot be whispered or implied, especially after the last two years. Countering it will take a lot of work.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1473715985718857732 …

It is great progress, too bad took almost two years. My wish is for them to say this loudly, not just on tweets, and explain it plainly because we have two years misimpressions—billions spent on plexiglass, little understanding of mask quality issues, no systematic use of HEPA…

Does this mean they will stop making me take off my N95 and put on a surgical mask at the hospitals from now on?

They probably won't take your word for it that your mask meets their standards based on your say-so, so I'm guessing the change wouldn't be to allow you to use what you brought from home.

"or a medical mask", by which they mean ASTM, not respirators. This isn't good enough just yet.

They do point out that respirators (including N95) are better especially when there is poor ventilation, but also that they're not available everywhere, so a mask is better than nothing.
