I haven’t worn a cloth mask since early in the pandemic but lots of people around me do and I’m curious what @zeynep thinks about this.https://twitter.com/seungminkim/status/1473654036171739144 …

My local experts say they do provide protection for the general population. Some are flimsy and wouldn't help much with direct contact with infected people. If I had to go to work or spend hours on public transportation, I might want medical grade masks. But I don't.

I’m at risk and often among the unvaccinated. I used to do surgical when around masked people, KN94 when people might not be masked. With the new variant it’s KN94 all the time. But they are pricey.

So any mask is better than no mask, but a cloth mask, especially one that’s not well-fitting, is going to protect you the least. Surgical masks have the right material, but not fit, can be improved with mask brace/better fitting mask over it. N95s best, KF94s are great too.

KN95 is the Chinese N95, and a lot of counterfeits around. If you are at high-risk and working with unvaccinated, an N95 is really your best option.

Thank you for weighing in! The brand I use was tested by Wirecutter and for me it's the most comfortable to wear as a teacher who must speak a lot of the time.

Oh sorry, it's KF94 that I use and was recommended by Wirecutter.

KF94s have great filtration! Especially since you say you are high-risk and work around unvaccinated people, I’d say do pay attention to if the fit is good for you. The behind-the-ear loop design is a bit more likely to produce gaps *in some people* because of size/face shape.

I personally have a beloved N95 brand because it is the most comfortable mask for me, and the seal is so good that my glasses don’t fog! I’ve also used KF94s and really like them, but the fit varies between brands. Best of luck, and feel free to ask specifics if we can help.

Very much appreciated! The KF94 (it is very hard to get the initials straight) from KN Flax fit me well, no gaps, and I like loops better than ties.
