This has been a problem the whole pandemic. “No evidence that…” when it means “we don’t know enough to conclude either way” being presented as “it’s evidence that…”

(I think sometimes people mean it the first way and it gets interpreted the second way, anyway).

Probably should retire "no evidence that" at this point. Just say "too early to tell"

Yes, this seems like a very big problem in our public comms. It was also the subject of Scott Alexander’s latest (excellent) substack post:https://astralcodexten.substack.com/p/the-phrase-no-evidence-is-a-red-flag …

That is indeed a huge problem, but I don't think that's what's happening here. Seems to me they're saying "too early to say with a great deal confidence, but preliminary evidence suggestive of no major difference", and not "we just don't know yet."

Maybe .. but not sure what % underreporting or early cases they would guess. Early in waves, cases are underascertained

This is absolutely true AND....because it's the way scientists & academics speak, but NOT the way everyone else does, they are constantly surprised that it's misinterpreted.

And are we sure that all the scientists and academics are crystal clear about the difference?
