With Omicron likely spreading here fast on top of the ongoing Delta wave, my advice to my personal (vaccinated) social network was... to avoid high-risk sports and appendicitis for a month or so. Not kidding. Hospitals already stretched-thin, more stress looks to be on the way.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1471159553224056832 …

There's a lot of focus on individual outcomes: if Omicron will be mild, who, when, how.. I get that, but even *if* severe disease risk were much less, a small percent of a huge wave is a big burden, especially after so much stress already on healthcare after two pandemic years.

I think a lot of unknowns remain, tbh. We only have a few weeks of data, a lot of open questions, and still a fairly big range of possibilities on the table. I really don't have any certainty really, but hospital overload seems to be a strong enough possibility to think about.

Also,
#longCOVID, a much more probable outcome for your vaccinated friends than appendicitis or major trauma, especially if they aren’t using strategies to reduce personal risk of exposure.https://twitter.com/jenbrea/status/1470975455188557827?s=20 …Jennifer Brea 🦒 added,
Jennifer Brea 🦒Verified account @jenbreaI am just going to keep saying it. This is the largest mass disabling event in our history. The more I sit with that reality the more dissonant our entire approach to the pandemic appears. It would be great if MDs could start talking about this.Show this thread0 replies 3 retweets 4 likesThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
