With Omicron likely spreading here fast on top of the ongoing Delta wave, my advice to my personal (vaccinated) social network was... to avoid high-risk sports and appendicitis for a month or so. Not kidding. Hospitals already stretched-thin, more stress looks to be on the way.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1471159553224056832 …

I think a lot of unknowns remain, tbh. We only have a few weeks of data, a lot of open questions, and still a fairly big range of possibilities on the table. I really don't have any certainty really, but hospital overload seems to be a strong enough possibility to think about.

What sucks is that we were promised (largely in several countries) that the purpose of the first measures was twofold: 1) contain the current wave of cases, 2) increase system's capacity to deal with future waves. If anything 2 has been reduced because staff leaving.

@BrianLehrer made the same point this morning on this segment of his show. Even if#Omicron is less severe - if far more people are infected - that can still end up being a major burden on our healthcare systemhttp://www.wnyc.org/story/ask-virologist-what-we-know-and-dont-know-about-omicron/ …Thanks. Depends how mild, I think. Hard to see how hospitalizations here in Florida during the omicron wave will exceed those during the delta wave.

Actual (non-snotty, non-rhetorical) Q: why?
