Problem with that Atlantic piece many are mad about is not that the author represents views of Americans who oppose public health measures or are ignoring COVID—it's that it *does not*. It's a typical finely-tuned *professional* performance of "I'm real America". Uninformative.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1470820825586614273 …

Yeah, he's just taking digs at "enemies" from his very, very tiny and unrepresentative corner of the world. "Real" Americans aren't busy being mad about infant formula like he is—new moms must go back to work in just six weeks, and often need dual incomes.https://twitter.com/hottakeponzi/status/1470841182435434496 …

It was so disrespectful to them to print it. I cannot imagine doing the work they have done, I have seen Yong express how it has impacted him personally/emotionally, and seeing that.

But also there are the trash takes by Conor Friedersdorf and Anne Applebaum. It’s hardly just one piece.

I think the issue is just like with the NYT and their oped page. Yes, the NYT does some incredible journalism. But they know well that their opeds get 10x the traction and readership than their journalism. The same with the Atlantic, chasing hate clicks submerges their good work.

It's not a question of the number of pieces, but rather the framing of pieces and the knowledge that certain pieces are going to blow up more than others. Also, on a wider level, can we stop giving every individual tradcath their own oped column?
