Problem with that Atlantic piece many are mad about is not that the author represents views of Americans who oppose public health measures or are ignoring COVID—it's that it *does not*. It's a typical finely-tuned *professional* performance of "I'm real America". Uninformative.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1470820825586614273 …

Well, I didn't say talented but yeah, that's exactly right. This has little to do with "real America"—just performative baiting of the same professional circles he's part of, but from the other end, to get everyone mad and, well. Yes. It works for that.https://twitter.com/DrJaredBrewer/status/1470834253029986304 …

I'm in favor of more in-depth reporting on the actual topic and I would read first-person accounts from or interviews with people who "moved on" from the pandemic, or oppose public health measures—even if I strongly disagreed. This was like "make Twitter mad" homework assignment.

Yes, but that piece isn't shedding light on that important topic, it's just generating heat for Twitter. There's definitely room for actual, sharp reporting on this, and even pieces critical of what people may perceive as overly restrictive measures.https://twitter.com/MrSeanRoper/status/1470835670352633858 …

It's just one piece! Nobody can publish widely without some misses. And I think we're mad at it for the wrong reason. Also, I mean,
@KatherineJWu and@edyong209, among many other talented writers, are producing great steady work on the pandemic there.https://twitter.com/kosturdistan/status/1470837980650745864 …Show this thread -
Yeah, he's just taking digs at "enemies" from his very, very tiny and unrepresentative corner of the world. "Real" Americans aren't busy being mad about infant formula like he is—new moms must go back to work in just six weeks, and often need dual incomes.https://twitter.com/hottakeponzi/status/1470841182435434496 …

Seems like a good addition to this thread.https://twitter.com/CharlesCMann/status/1471171401474351106 …

The Atlantic article was an insult to every overburdened healthcare worker.

He certainly is -- but his county is literally under 50%, and there's obviously a huge spike that they can't handle, so they're filling up hospitals in more responsible areas.pic.twitter.com/XtaadCCC8A

It’s accurate. Outside of Dallas there is no attention paid to Covid. How do you know if you stay in Brooklyn and similar environs?

He also failed to mention that 800,000 Americans have died in the past two years, and 1,300 continue to die every day. He's well-insulated from the threat implied by those numbers, being white & at least middle class, but that insulation doesn't mean he shouldn't acknowledge it.
