“Your followers are bad” is the new “read the room.” It’s not an argument, it’s a statement of revulsion that stands in for an argument when you don’t have an argument.https://twitter.com/AmandaMarcotte/status/1469715983833182212 …

You mention mainstream failures Zeynep - was there a single mainstream success? I would say the vaccine but it works so badly that people who are vaccinated aren't protected if others aren't vaccinated as evidenced by the vaccine mandates so vaccines are a failute

It's sort of analogous to political fights around schools in the last two years. Lots of huge problems with how education has been managed, and also a lot of lunatics screaming at school board meetings. So if you're defending the school administrators, point at the lunatics.

Yep, a version of nut-picking. Plus, write vaporware articles denying reality and attribute people's discomfort on topic X solely to misinformation, Matt's crazy followers, lunatics, people who hate science etc. It's good for Twitter, bad for reality (which always catches up).

This is adjacent to a point I often make, that right-wingers are great at identifying a problem (e.g., mainstream media sucks), and then wanting to use a solution that makes everything worse.
