Wait what you think we should get infected after vaccination so that... we are better protected against infection after vaccination? Given sufficient supply, I'll take the vaccination route.

It's cool that you made that decision for yourself in a Sisyphean effort to indefinitely delay your inevitable infection, but can your class of privileged, anxious professionals please stop taking hostage the rest of us who don't wanna make a virus the meaning of their existence

*Given sufficient supply*, why should anyone risk transmitting this to someone else when there’s a straightforward way to reduce the risk? What’s the Sisyphean effort? Nobody is storming the beaches at Normandy. There are programs for those afraid of needles, if that’s your fear?

You guys seem to think getting infected some heroic accomplishment. I guess you live a life with so little risk or accomplishment that you’ve lost all sense of what’s actually heroic? Vaccines aren’t that scary! Even most children manage it without crying.

You keep bringing this conversation back to Covid vaccines, but I don’t think the main point here is about boosters. It’s about completely moving on from Covid restrictions.

Protecting people, especially the vulnerable is the best way to move on, and again, and that's what vaccines do. It's an infectious disease, and, at a minimum, elderly and the immunocompromised aren't society's leftovers.

I don’t see how any of this is relevant. Nobody is calling people leftovers. Elderly & immunocompromised people existed before Covid, too. All we’re saying is that we’re not going to attempt to avoid an unavoidable Coronavirus, especially when those attempts come with great harm.

They existed before and now there is a novel virus that is a great threat to them because it's novel. I mean, really? This is like saying why deploy the fire department, the house was there before. Because. There. Is. A. Fire. Now. And what's the great harm of vaccines?

Not really sure where the argument is here. I'm in the camp that says the days of mandated NPIs are over. Vaccines (and newer antiviral treatments) are the answer. Those especially vulnerable will have to take more precautions. There is just no way around that.

Hopefully, antiviral treatments will help immunocompromised people for whom vaccines do not help. This study from 2015 on a different virus shows antiviral treatments generally do work for immunocompromised patients.https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25273082/

So, maybe we're all just talking past each other (maybe). But it seems like Aaron's take is what we're talking about. Regardless of your take on boosters (I'm for them) the point is mandated NPIs must end! Encourage vaxxes/boosters/even masks if you want. But no more mandates!

For anyone following this thread who, like me, didn’t know the acronym: Nonpharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs) are actions, apart from getting vaccinated and taking medicine, that people and communities can take to help slow the spread of illnesses like pandemic influenza (flu).
