It's all terrible but... This is legit fascinating for anyone with interest in evolutionary dynamics. Their argument: *On their own*, many Omicron mutations would likely be deleterious, but are adaptive when they *co-occur*... How you get rapid and substantial remodelling...https://twitter.com/alexvespi/status/1467622342251761668 …

In part two, they explain if there are reversions of the individually deleterious mutations, their pattern could support one hypothesis over other. OTOH, if nothing reverts, doesn't tip for either hypothesis BUT suggests can happen AGAIN in other lineages.https://twitter.com/midnucas/status/1467631379584143367 …

As an interested layperson I got the feeling there's a big implication that they leave unsaid but I can't understand. Does this strongly support for example an immunocompromised/chronic infection origin for Omicron above the animal reservoir hypothesis that others posit?

So this means we should mentally prepare for the omnicron+ wave in winter of 2022-2023?

If you haven’t been following… highly likely that in an immunocompromised host the selection pressure is immense. And under immense selection pressure your get a very atypical ratio of function mutations (“non-synonymous”) over no-functional-change mutations (“synonymous”)https://twitter.com/Clarksterh/status/1467454697078353924 …

Useful paper on rate of mutations in undertreated HIV patient at Stanford. 5 useful mutations in 15 days (note many not novel, but rediscovery by virus). Note also the lab leak ppl seem to have misinterpreted some synonymous vs NS ratio data in the paper https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/articles/PMC8462335/ …

Terrifying if you combine this with Carl Bergson's tweets about Merck's Thor's Hammer treatment possibly inducing sub-lethal mutagenesis. We could go down this evolutionary road on turbo...

          1. The FDA recently approved Merck's new COVID treatment, an antiviral known known as molnupiravir. The drug works by mimicking the cytidine and uridine nucleosides and thereby inducing frequent mutations in replicating virus.

At least we are giving omicron plenty hosts to test this hypothesis, this is good. Right?? Sigh.
