As an interested layperson I got the feeling there's a big implication that they leave unsaid but I can't understand. Does this strongly support for example an immunocompromised/chronic infection origin for Omicron above the animal reservoir hypothesis that others posit?

No, not at this point. Have you read part 2 yet, because they discuss this at the end. The big partly unsaid takeaway is that if this pattern continues, it may happen more often, which means bigger evolutionary jumps, which means even more unpredictable virus, I think.
