I have not figured out how to monetize it, but I may not be as smart as @zeynep, who seems to have almost everything figured out.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1462800937265897484 …

The lucrative path in her field would have been to join the in-crowd which let Peter you-know-who lead the whole field by the nose into very troubling corner—the damaging effects of which are yet to play, likely for decades—for almost two years despite obvious, visible problems.

I'm very confused, even the more successful virologists aren't exactly rolling in it. There are much easier ways to make money!

If you’re going to wave around credentials, you need a much better track record. Still, I appreciate that Stephen is also a junior person who’s outspoken and not always with requisite support. I hope he’d get the obvious point. Sticking your neck out isn’t a straight money play.

It seems like you’re still denying that the “money play” in academic science is to leave academic science and, say, write a sensationalizing book. It also seems like no matter how many people with direct experience tell you this, you don’t want to believe them. Why?

Indeed I understand the intended point, I simply disagree. I think Alina has played a very harmful role and I don’t think it’s brave to write a book based on conjecture. It’s certainly wrong that the alternative path is lucrative though.

Alina has a much bigger profile than I do and if she makes $20 off her book that’ll be $20 more than I’ve made off this entire saga. Which is all fine. I’m not involved in this for those things. I could tweet incessantly if I were. But I don’t agree theres bravery.

Are you sure you didn't paint yourself into the corner by not understanding the incredibly low probability that a random virus leak would be fit for human spread without getting super lucky with the host? That's where most non virologists are making their logical error. I was.

I don't understand what you mean. I'm just confused by the suggestion that joining the "in-crowd" in virology or public health is a prudent financial decision, especially if one intends to remain in academia

Pretty sure @zeynep is more approving of @Ayjchan than the vastly-more-established @PeterDaszak. And see this:https://undark.org/2021/11/24/scientists-square-off-over-covid-wuhan-and-peter-daszak/ …
