Does this fallacy have a name? I propose "appeal to weaponization."https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1462852187474833410 …

Zeynep's "appeal to weaponization" fallacy: Claiming that a particular argument, fact, or a version of thereof, has been used inappropriately or to support bad policies, therefore all attempts to raise this argument or fact are inappropriate or automatically lead to bad policies.

It's used in both manners. It's when ideas and/or arguments acquire falseness and/or inappropriateness by association with nefarious, unwanted or illegitimate forces either by being used by them in some version or even seen as empowering them.https://twitter.com/giuseppe_aaron/status/1462855829607141380 …

Isn't the point of a fallacy that it argues the truth of a position in an invalid way, rather than some admonition against mentioning it? This doesn't seem like a "fallacy".

It's not really that, though. It's broader, and more than refuting an argument. And like some of the other recognized fallacies, it straddles epistemology and sociology in how it operates.https://twitter.com/StefanFSchubert/status/1462853939326509063 …

It's a variant of guilt by association, no? Where the guilt attaches to ideas rather than people/institutions.

This is simply promoting a particular case to a universal rule. It can be negative or positive. For example: the Polio vaccination was good -- therefore the Covid vaccination is good.

Though obviously it can happen anywhere, it seem particularly USian? The US social and political structure drives into A vs B, allowing this fallacy. So if you have an argument against B you must be in service of A. Not allowed that there could be anything else going on.
