Apparently, Germany stopped offering free rapid or PCR tests on the theory this would encourage remaining unvaccinated to get vaccinated. How many countries are designing public health policies by assigning it as homework to econ undergrads? Umpteenth example of this logic.pic.twitter.com/bE2TZbV7DG

Hey, that is pretty insulting to Econ undergrads!

Totally appropriate econ undergrad homework to design moral hazard related policies... Not just for this!

A good economics undergraduate would understand that tests are a pure positive externality to others and should be subsidised.

How high would this subsidy need to be to compensate for isolation and tracing disincentives?

I think the opposite: the isolation and tracing disincentives would need to be really, really high to discourage free and convenient testing. Hong Kong may be hitting this, by the way, their isolation policies are very strict, expensive and overly harsh so may discourage.

When you read the testimonies/stories of even people who deliberately decided not to vaccinate with conviction more than mere confusion, their behavior upon infection is almost uniformly to isolate. Who wants to infect loved ones? A positive is an existential shock.

Of course, you isolate & protect loved ones, even more so when those loved ones are especially vulnerable. But the rigidity of the isolation/tracing rules makes the disincentive unnecessarily high. People should have flexibility to use info (where spreads, who most vulnerable).

Thanks for the reply. I see it differently though, rigid isolation and tracing rules make rapid tests far too expensive for most people -- they remain a luxury of the few. E.g. staying home for 14 days (or more for a family) no matter what the life circumstances is a big burden.
