Untenable. Even if the Democrats win votes in congressional races in North Carolina by 53-46%, the Republicans would still get the majority of representatives. And this is on top of already lopsided Senate where ~600k in Wyoming have same number of senators as ~40 million in CA.https://twitter.com/BrendanNyhan/status/1458547487636135946 …

How about: I do understand what the Senate is. What's untenable is this level of divergence between voters, numerically, and their representation at pretty much every level of governance—cumulatively all pulling in the same direction: advantage R.https://twitter.com/_MikeMoss/status/1458806255993118726 …

It's not "lopsided". The States of Wyoming and California both have exactly the same representation : 2 You're getting confused with the proportional representative body, which is the House of Representatives. "Schoolhouse Rock" has a good explainer on it.

In North Carolina, this also held at state level: a bare R majority held a *veto proof* two-thirds supermajority in the state legislature, so when Democrats did win the non-gerrymanderable race for governor, they faced a major and undemocratic obstacle to exercising that power.

The funny upshot is that a big Republican plurality next year would temporarily ameliorate this—less gridlock procedurally, and democratic legitimacy for the winners even if their win is magnified by a thumb on the scale. All they have to do is clear 50%

You'd get less gridlock, but you'd have a bare majority get to undo/oppose what bigger majorities did/tried, by reps produced by the non-competitive district system who also tend to be different than what a representative electoral system would produce. Spiral downward.

And no it doesn’t promise anything. Wisconsin is the leading indicator here. We’ve been living this for nearly a decade and the only things we’ve gotten done are busting a teachers union, getting grifted by Foxconn and tax cuts for the rich. Oh and new worse maps.

A lot of this critique comes down to "it's not fair", which of course is true. But from the standpoint of democratic legitimacy, having Republicans win a 50%+ plurality would cut the legs out from the argument that they only win by cheating and make systemic reforms even harder.
