Untenable. Even if the Democrats win votes in congressional races in North Carolina by 53-46%, the Republicans would still get the majority of representatives. And this is on top of already lopsided Senate where ~600k in Wyoming have same number of senators as ~40 million in CA.https://twitter.com/BrendanNyhan/status/1458547487636135946 …

How about: I do understand what the Senate is. What's untenable is this level of divergence between voters, numerically, and their representation at pretty much every level of governance—cumulatively all pulling in the same direction: advantage R.https://twitter.com/_MikeMoss/status/1458806255993118726 …

It's not "lopsided". The States of Wyoming and California both have exactly the same representation : 2 You're getting confused with the proportional representative body, which is the House of Representatives. "Schoolhouse Rock" has a good explainer on it.

In North Carolina, this also held at state level: a bare R majority held a *veto proof* two-thirds supermajority in the state legislature, so when Democrats did win the non-gerrymanderable race for governor, they faced a major and undemocratic obstacle to exercising that power.

It's untenable in the sense that you cannot have a well-functioning political system under these constraints. It distorts everything, and prevents the regular functioning of politics and governance. It's tenable in the sense yeah... it can go on.https://twitter.com/tpwk47/status/1458812771957620744 …

california’s proposed gerrymander leaves R’s with like 6 seats out of 55. that’s significantly fewer than the actual representation in the state, so i think it’s a bipartisan issue

Just going by your math and not comparing it to anything else that is less than a 10% difference. But sure, that's just like North Carolina, where at one point the Supreme Court refused a case because they said they couldn't tell who was actually the state government and

Senators, like all politicians, represent people, not states or other geographic boundaries. Fine to say the Senate *should be* lopsided. Wrong to say it isn't.

Yeah but whose fault is that? The Ds decided to court voters who provide an extremely inefficient vote distribution. That is what made the R shenanigans possible.

Yes, now in order for any self-correcting to occur to a party that goes to far Dems will be hurt by small problems while it would take almost a complete catastrophic or political realignment for Rs to feel the same consequence, completely ruining the positives of our system
