Iceland currently has *a total* of two people in intensive care due to COVID, and *a total* of thirteen people hospitalized. They've had four COVID deaths in *all of 2021*. I'm not aware what restrictions are back, but doesn't seem to me like the best example of a clown show. https://twitter.com/venivici27/status/1455646502131572737 …pic.twitter.com/qtEK0iEat4

For those thinking Iceland is tiny, here's a good overview of the official and (I think pretty good) estimates of actual COVID deaths per 100,000—Iceland is about 340,000 people so multiple the below numbers by four to do a rough comparison of their performance.pic.twitter.com/XKwVa7wykt

Well, turns out restrictions aren't "back" either—they have been easing them. I'm not dismissing responding to rises in cases, as necessary. But the reality of all this is pretty straightforward: highly-vaccinated countries fare much better.https://twitter.com/data_dinner/status/1455655748978061318 …

It also has a population that is barely a mid-sized American city, to be fair, so those tiny absolute numbers aren't as good as they sound.

I think we (as in public health officials) need to start being honest about what endemicity will look like.

That absolutely depends on what structural changes such as ventilation improvements and test/trace/isolate programs are put in place, it's not a magical number of deaths per capita that will be predictable and exist in a vacuum.
