Come on, folks. This is, again, accusing of her not being stupid and having long-term ambitions. (And Tom, especially, come on).https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1349425827545559040 …

Yes finally we have a Dem who can set a national narrative, let's put an end to that, seems good

Obviously I’m good w/ AOC using FB to find donors and organize / message etc! I think it’s weird to do that *and* say it’s a cancer destroying democracy

Come on. “I think cars have been terrible for the world, our society, cities and individuals” and “I will drive this car to get to work from my suburban house” are perfectly compatible. The sad part is, this would be obvious to you for any other topic. This is how it goes.

The false claim I can't seem to get you to let go of is that AOC is using Facebook ads the way other politicians do. The better analogy is "I will do donuts in this Formula 1 car while calling people to give me money to pay for gas." Her FB spending is bizarrely circular.pic.twitter.com/6CL18Ua9xi

Yes, many other politicians do not understand how Facebook or the current public sphere works, nor do they have her obvious ambitions or possibilities, nor are they targeted like her. She is defending/shaping her own image and building lists, aka, yep, smart and ambitious.

Is AOC the only politician who understands Facebook or has some kind of ambitions? Because here's the list of spending on Facebook from *all* PACs and political campaigns, and it's her name that's all over the leaderboard.pic.twitter.com/DEQqy3o7vb

If the argument is "only Zeynep and AOC understand how to build lists or a political base in 2021", and this process requires running an endless stream of fundraising ads on the service you are at the same time accusing of killing democracy, I guess we have to agree to disagree.

She really is different, obviously. What other junior congressperson gets name-checked like her by the opposing party, from the ex-president down. Nobody is even close.

Ilhan Omar, for one. But this argument works in the opposite direction than you think—what junior congressperson has an easier time fundraising than AOC?

Omar has no national path, or possibility, obviously. That’s like comparing Obama to random other junior non-white Congressperson around 2007. She’s not just fundraising, she’s defending her image and building a list. That’s bigger deal than random money now.

You asked what other junior congressperson gets name checked like AOC, so I answered you. Questions of who is nationally viable aside I don't think the list-building theory you advance holds water. But it's unfalsifiable, so we're at an impasse and I guess we can wait a few years
