A solid essay on natural immunity and vaccination—even that has been chewed up by the polarization here so good advice comes from Europe. That said, a key obstacle is how bad we are keeping track of anything— even the vaccinated, let alone who had COVID. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/28/opinion/covid-vaccine-hybrid-natural-immunity.html#commentsContainer …pic.twitter.com/1Sfz72QZWH

"Natural immunity" is not a great term, so I get the "so-called"—it's a nod to the descriptive nature of language where she uses the common term in public writing. Immunity from infection versus vaccination is the better term; neither is unnatural. Alas.https://twitter.com/sega_geneziz/status/1453721141684543496 …

It's so weird this became a controversial topic, and people say "what about natural immunity" as if it's a gotcha? People from many countries must be looking at some of this the way they look at the "yeah, I have no idea what my bill for that minor ER visit will be" tweets.

Of course you get some immunity after infection; of course better to avoid the risk of illness and get vaccinated; and of course if you got infected anyway, it's a thing to consider. Alas, that needs actionable record-keeping, to start with, and the ability to have sane policies.

One, it is not completely clear. Kinda early. Two even if it were *more*, how would it matter? It's just a terrible idea to try to acquire immunity through infection given how much side effects and dangers lurk for even the young/healthy from infection compared to vaccination.

I find the obsession of comparing immunity types from infection versus vaccination to be pointless and/or misleading, to be honest. Of course infection will confer some immunity, maybe even a lot, but it is not a path to be pursued compared to vaccination given the risk profile.

Who is obsessing? I'm asking an honest question about immunity. I support vaccinations. TBH, your response reminds me of how people were told not to wear masks early on because "they wouldn't do anything." If there's research that says X, tell people it's X. Don't twist it.

Maybe not you, but it is a constant churn and discussion comparing immunity types. I don't see the question, yet, as policy-relevant. And I am certainly not the person to make that point about masks, though. I.. know.

Yes, and thank you for that—that's why I compared it to that. If the data on natural immunity is strong, but data on myocarditis as a result of vaccines isn't, and if a teen has antibodies, wouldn't it be policy-relevant perhaps to give them a vaccine pass for school, for now?

The article discusses just that question.
