Your "the media is being critical of X because they see X as a competitive rival" are 100% wrong. Sorry. At best you've got media elites in status competition with other elites. More often there's some internal matter among the criticized group & media becomes proxies

Lol. There is a consortium of new orgs rolling out the anti-Facebook stuff in concert. Literally.

And where did they get the underlying leaked docs?

This vulgar Marxist take on why there's so many stories on the leaks does not really persuade. "Facebook is the new Big Tobacco" simply seems like a story they can sell. And as usual they're being used by the leakers to advance their own agendas.

And in a Marxist take, the media would have been acting against interest to go after Big Tobacco, who were major advertisers.

@zeynep had the only convincing economic analysis of this, which was essentially both sides *are* interdependent, and will simply exist in this nominally adversarial but monetarily coordinate state in perpetuity

Especially the big players. For them, it’s more than fine. Small ones are different but not key. Plus, people who think this is a competitive move have no idea of how journalists think and work. Somewhat like academics, they’re fairly oblivious to the big picture business model.

Tech folks are very attuned to their dashboards & vesting schedules, and incentivized to think like that. Old world idea industries don’t work like that at all. Many of them may go under exactly because of that. But again, not the big ones. This is better for them—consolidation.

And when you do have journalistic orgs with clear bonus and incentive structures (I have worked for such) you won’t hear thanks and praise from staff for transparently demonstrating benchmarks. You will instead hear bitching and moaning about how all the wrong things are rewarded
