Definitely need academics and civil society in this discussion. There is little easy here, and need depth. https://twitter.com/jbakcoleman/status/1453026193486213126 …

I'm not talking about people PhDs who are Facebook employees; I'm talking about *independent* academics. Facebook employees are limited by Facebook's business, PR and legal interests and do not have the freedom of research and speech of academics.https://twitter.com/orgnet/status/1453045802016854026 …

Media coverage has done a pretty impressive job of disincentivising FB from wanting to cooperate openly. Bravo.

Sure, but if you attack them for conducting even basic consumer research what's the likely outtake for Facebook, or indeed any social media company. Call me nuts but if there was a spirit of open enquiry rather than a rolling inquisition we might actually get something useful.

You think spirit of open inquiry would get Facebook or Google to share research? One, we have the *actual* track record: they do not share if they don't like the result or the reaction. Two, not calling you nuts, but please be wary of offers of cheap bridges in Kings County.

There was a time a while ago, maybe this could have been possible. Say 2012 when FB was helping the correct candidate win elections. Back then academics could use Facebook to research stuff but unfortunately that was the origin of the Cambridge Analytica thing.

I, along with other academics, was a critic of the broader picture issues back then, too when "the correct candidate" as you put it, was seen as benefiting from Facebook etc. But even back then, independent academics did not have proper access—it's a company!

Btw I think we're agreeing with each other. It would be nice if they did, but they don't, they're a company, why would they? What I'm trying to add is that it would be nice if they were encouraged to do so rather than attacking them for everything they do.
