Some will get sick and even die—and many are just afraid or confused, not committed anti-vaxxers. Plus, even 10% unvaccinated can overload hospitals: ICUs have little slack. And this keeps the virus circulating more, risking elderly, immunocompromised etc.https://twitter.com/Jimmy_Stick/status/1449024735807950859 …

Also on the side-effects: I recently had a minor concern during a routine COVID test on a weekend. It resulted in a bill I was told would be between $0 and $4500—and nobody could tell me which, for months. And my insurance is what counts as really solid, for the US. Just nuts.

A thread with a good local reporting from the NYC area on this topic. "Undervaccinated areas are often barometers of disconnect."https://twitter.com/mitrakalita/status/1449368483075137542 …

I’m getting objections in versions of “what about those with natural immunity”. Despite looking as hard as I could, I see no evidence of a sizable group among the remaining unvaccinated who have that as a key reason. It’s more an online polarization angle and talking point.

A debate on what the previously-infected should be recommended etc. is valid imo, but has little to do with the questions around the *sociology* of the unvaccinated. I think it’s one of those talking points for the very-online/polarized, rather than a big deal for many out there.

This is a good thread. I'd like to underline: only about a third of pregnant women are vaccinated, with terrible outcomes: high rates of death. As she says later, this intersects with how we've miscommunicated about "natural"/safe and fertility/pregnancy.https://twitter.com/tracybrisson/status/1449737791022239749 …

Tracy 🍑 @tracybrissonI work in an industry with a very low vax rate (weddings) in the south, and am hiring, so I speak to a lot of unvaxed. They fall into 3 distinct camps (1) worried about fertility (most), (2) they think a mask is the same as a vaccine, and (3) medical freedom (least). I keep being asked about (potential) long-term effects. The concern is valid, but there really *are* good reasons for why we can be more confident with vaccines and (lack of) long-term effects, compared to regular drugs. See this piece by

zeynep tufekciVerified account @zeynepYes, many people feel more comfortable with drugs than vaccines, but, in fact, it is much easier to be comfortable with long-term safety profile of vaccines than many drugs. Excellent long-form article by@andrew_croxford here on why, for the curious: https://bostonreview.net/science-nature/andrew-l-croxford-long-term-safety-argument-over-covid-19-vaccines … pic.twitter.com/vufTkRHpuBShow this thread5 replies 30 retweets 103 likesShow this thread -
A more valid concern is whether we are picking up rare *but quick* adverse effects now—very rare events require large sample sizes to find the signal. So, yes, there is an enormous effort to find those, but also, the point is exactly that: they are very, very rare.

… and therefore _should_ be irrelevant in the face of a highly infectious disease that present a higher risk of severe disease, death and long-term sequelae.

Given how infectious the Delta variant is, I think basically every human on the planet is highly likely to be exposed to this virus multiple times. So the relevant comparison is not "vaccine vs nothing" but "vaccine vs virus."
