Yes, some unvaccinated are deniers claiming COVID is a hoax. But research shows many other groups. There are unvaccinated people who wear masks, for example: most likely to be black women. Only a third of pregnant women are vaccinated: babies are being orphaned as they're born.pic.twitter.com/zedfkCLqXR

For some, fear of needles reaches phobia-levels and can cause them to faint or have a panic attack. Research suggests about one in ten adults avoid vaccines because of this. Canada, UK etc. reach out, offer support and privacy rooms. What do we do? Everything to make it worse.pic.twitter.com/VvLdKqMw4C

Also, look. Researchers trying to study issues like these—how many of the unvaccinated can be reached and how—are *still* struggling to get even meager levels of funding. I don't care how it works in movies: brilliant science is great, but cannot, by itself, fix all that ails us.pic.twitter.com/tgg7pVU723

Yes. These people absolutely exist, and some may be too ashamed to admit this, and are talking about "doing more research" when they are, in fact, frozen in fear. Mandates can absolutely help these people, in my view, but we can do more to offer support.https://twitter.com/TCPalmLStancil/status/1449003178373038115 …

By chance, a vaccine hesitant reader called me Thursday and expressed his fear of needles and a looming employer mandate to get the jab. He told me he hasn't been to a doctor in a decade. https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1448996193212710934 …

Yes, part of it. I've suggested mandates since May, but as @ScottGottliebMD says, big carrots are better than big sticks when possible. Research shows an uptick in vaccine hesitancy among young women/mothers: a five-alarm fire for childhood vaccination.https://twitter.com/b18c1swap/status/1449005897221562369 …

Yep. Smart policy is to allow the unvaccinated who are fearful, frozen, or made a bad decision before to wait and now can't admit it, to cross the line *in a face-saving manner.* Pry that group away from the ideological, loud, rage-inducing anti-vaxxers. https://twitter.com/PaffyRalmeiro/status/1449007804648468480 …

I don't begrudge anyone's anger—especially at those stoking fear as a strategy in our increasingly non-responsive politics. Still must work to understand the lay of the land. *They* want it to be only a shouting match. *Their* strategy is to confuse and polarize around the anger.

Immunity after infection is *of course* real but research shows vaccines also benefit these people—more flexible policies from them make sense, but we don't even have a system to verify vaccination. So many failures go back to logistics/infrastructure.https://twitter.com/BetSnyder/status/1449011303809437699 …

Struggling to understand how you write a deep dive into the unvaccinated and not mention one single word about the many millions of people who have recovered from a COVID infection and already have immunity. Bizarre, baffling and disappointing.

Yep. When I volunteered at a vaccination clinic, we made people *wait* watching others get jabbed, in plain view—exactly the wrong set-up, I've since realized. Needle anxiety is common and can cause people to faint, and yet so little attention to it.https://twitter.com/dangoor/status/1449021788785152000 …

Knowing about the fear of needles that some % of people have, it kind of drives me crazy that *so many* articles about the vaccine show a needle going into an arm. It seems like that would just make it harder for those with needle fear.

They didn't at least use privacy screens?! I've been part of events with three different health systems and all three at least had the people getting the shots go behind a curtain. (And yes, we had a decent number of adults openly expressing a lot of anxiety about the needles.)

They did, but the set-up and the angles made it mostly moot. Big room, about 15 people getting vaccinated simultaneously around three walls, and we made people walk up to the middle to wait to get ushered to the next open one. It wasn't intentional, but an oversight.

In Alberta, Canada, our COVID19 vaccination was in a huge trade show facility they were vaccinating ~100 people at a time, partitioned, distanced but could still see others across the 20 foot aisle getting the needle, I was told this was a Rapid Flow setup
