I’m interested in the meta: why things go viral.
With a basic timeline (including a two year period when it’s calm and Larson has a chance to ameliorate but comes back with more provocation so things heat up again), the story is less ambiguous—less suited to viral disagreement?

I got interested in the meta part: why was everyone talking about it?
My conclusion is it was actually written, narratively, to be a lot more ambiguous than the straightforward writing of a timeline would have been. It’s a deliberate “what color is this dress” construction.https://twitter.com/gaberivera/status/1446865414965719043 …Show this thread -
I mean, the writing of the story is brilliant. But the basic facts of the story are a lot more straightforward, if they were to be presented as a timeline and with a lot less writing talent. Part of the talent in art is often exactly this, though, no?https://twitter.com/jeffmanuel/status/1446868182791303173 …

Haven’t listened to Serial but I had actually the same question about it: Why did it go so viral in the online discussion?https://twitter.com/steveolson/status/1446869165550149634 …

It's a truly zeitgeist kind of story and I'm firmly team Dawn. Writers draw inspiration but the letter was clearly plagiarized

“It’s also *a choice* to participate so unabashedly in the CRWR cottage industry (that’s what I call workshops like Grub Street as well as 90% of MFA programs) which relies on sad people with money to burn to take their classes and fund the livelihoods of the people who run them”pic.twitter.com/jwxEfCij9m

I think its awful people find the room to demonstrate contempt for someone who donated a kidney but not disgust for a person who plagiarized & humiliated a perceived friend to their professional peers & the public for writing accolades. Its classic victim blaming.

There is definitely an undercurrent of white savior resentment from Larson that’s understandable and her friends, being her friends, chose to side with her. But Larson let her resentment get the best of her and they all come off as gross. There is no one I root for in this story.
