Wonder how much of the difference is also a clustering effect—and Canada's success in deliberate prioritizing and having a healthcare system that can deliver. The unvaccinated in the US do cluster in social/geographic networks, amplifying risk. Not sure who they are in Canada.

So the US doesn't just have large numbers of unvaccinated, we have them embedded in a clustered network structure that focuses the risk, like a magnifying glass focusing the sun's heat. (A point that kept getting lost in herd immunity discussions: network structure matters).

Doesn’t latitude play a little bit of a part here as well?

Good point! So vaccine delivery to those neighborhoods, workplaces, and schools would make a big difference

At least in our region - the priority for limited vaccinations were in hotspots which were particularly marginalized and racialized communities. They were offered first dibs over low risk communities. Plus dose spacing which happened due to lack of supply.

Shouldn’t this work both ways, though? Network effects that concentrate the risk in some populations should also dilute it in others, in comparison to the average national vaccination rate.

But everyone ends up going to the same hospitals, so risk of not having access to healthcare when you need it even for non-covid reasons is something everyone (vaccinated, unvaccinated) faces.
