Wonder how much of the difference is also a clustering effect—and Canada's success in deliberate prioritizing and having a healthcare system that can deliver. The unvaccinated in the US do cluster in social/geographic networks, amplifying risk. Not sure who they are in Canada.

So the US doesn't just have large numbers of unvaccinated, we have them embedded in a clustered network structure that focuses the risk, like a magnifying glass focusing the sun's heat. (A point that kept getting lost in herd immunity discussions: network structure matters).

Good point! So vaccine delivery to those neighborhoods, workplaces, and schools would make a big difference

In the Province of Manitoba vaccination rates in the City of Winnipeg are very high (88% of 12+). But there are communities in Southern Manitoba with large Mennonite populations born elsewhere, where vaccine hesitancy/refusal is very high, and vaccination rates as low as 30%.

A lot depends on politics/prov leadership. Here in AB, also in SK, we have conservative govts who bleat about "personal responsibility", pander to base + abdicate all responsibility. In AB all elective surgeries, inc pediatric, have been cancelled + military called in to help.

The particulars here in rural AB seem very much like the US south, with a lot of anti-vax candidates in AB now running for school trustee in this month's elections and protesting at hospitals. A lot of people falling down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole.

I actually thought Canada had less hospital and in particular ICU capacity than the US.

It's true. One of the reasons why Canada has done better than the US in avoiding hospitalizations and therefore deaths during the pandemic is because we had no choice but to do so, due to our lower health care capacity. But whatever avoids death is good, even if seemingly ironic.

my guess is that American ideas and dynamics have infected the northern neighbor - they stream our videos and adopt our attitudes, at a lower rate than America, but still to a significant degree. Seasonality is the other huge factor - the north hasn't faced a delta winter.

A few million Canadians in the Atlantic bubble benefited from an isolated geography, travel restrictions, and in Nova Scotia extensive RAT. In Ontario and Quebec (largest population) NPI such as masking are still in place. In AB & SK NPI were dropped and now ICUs are full.

Like the 🇺🇸 in 🇨🇦 the Delta wave has had significant geographic differences. Full ICUs in the western Provinces. Moderate levels in ON and Quebec. And until a recent increase low levels in the four Atlantic Provinces. Each Province has taken different approaches to Public Health.
