This NEJM paper (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2114583?query=featured_home …) makes a key point that I've tried to hammer home. Abs always decline, but they are progressively replaced by better quality Abs so it takes fewer to protect. Compare the left with the right graphs. Neutralization doesn't decline as much.pic.twitter.com/1sDp8jUfOA

Motion to center all public discussions of this topic on epi curves for the rest of us! I don't know what the disconnect is (you probably do!) but there's a clear gap between "chatter" about lab Abs studies, usually freaking people out, & what's later observed, epidemiologically.

(I mean, not discounting the crucial importance of these studies for the people in the field at all.. Just that for the public, having these studies play this much a role in the discussion hasn't been that clarifying? The epidemiological data seems so much more useful?)

In principle I'd agree with you, but in reality the epi data have been wildly inconsistent. So then the pessimistic cherry pick Israel/Qatar; the optimistic look at Denmark/Canada. The immunology gives us a way to see if the epi curves make any sense.https://twitter.com/deeptabhattacha/status/1425586242511540224 …

Like many in the general public, I find the huge range of vaccine effectiveness numbers being reported head-spinning. So hard to know what to make of it. But thankfully, there are some emerging immunological data so we can begin to ask, "Does that VE number make sense?" 🧵

A long-from piece on *that* from an immunologist would likely be really helpful for people. *nudge nudge*. Ultimately, the questions most people would like to know are about the consequences: illness, severity, deaths. The relationship between the two would be of great interest.

This! Australia just today published a recommendation AGAINST Ab measurement on the basis that nothing “definitively” demonstrates immune correlates of protection, in its authorisation of boosters https://www.health.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/2021/10/atagi-recommendations-on-the-use-of-a-third-primary-dose-of-covid-19-vaccine-in-individuals-who-are-severely-immunocompromised_1.pdf …
